Valheim 1.0 reference
Valheim Console Commands
The complete command reference: how to open the console, the admin commands that work on a
dedicated server, every cheat behind devcommands, the spawn syntax, and the
rule that changed everything in 1.0 — cheats now lock your achievements permanently.
Read this before you type devcommands
Valheim 1.0 added an achievement system, and Iron Gate's own FAQ is blunt about the trade.
Using most commands — including spawn — puts a permanent flag on both
the character and the world that stops them ever earning achievements. Characters
that cheated before 1.0 are flagged retroactively. A handful of commands, freefly
among them, are exempt.
Valheim has three command systems, not one
Mixing them up is the single most common reason a command "does nothing". Valheim splits commands by who is allowed to run them and where they take effect, and only one of the three groups works on a rented server.
| System | Who can run it | Unlocked by | Single player | Dedicated server | Blocks achievements |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Player commands | Anyone with the console open | Nothing | Yes | Yes | No |
| Admin commands | Only IDs in adminlist.txt | Being on the admin list | Not needed | Yes | No |
| Cheat commands | Anyone with the console open | Typing devcommands | Yes | No, unless a mod allows it | Yes — permanently |
How to enable the console
Step 1
The settings toggle — the method that works now
Open Settings, go to the gameplay tab and switch the developer console on. This arrived with the Call to Arms update (patch 0.221.4, 9 September 2025) and it survives restarts. The same patch turned the console off by default on Xbox, so Xbox players enable it here too — older guides that say Xbox needs no setup are out of date.
Step 2
The -console launch option — still works, and overrides the setting
Steam: right-click Valheim in your library, choose Properties, General, and put -console in the Launch Options box, then start the game from Steam. PC Game Pass and Microsoft Store builds have no launch options box: make a shortcut to Valheim.exe, open its properties and add -console to the end of the Target field. On Mac, start the binary with the argument: /Applications/Valheim.app/Contents/MacOS/Valheim -console
Step 3
Press F5 to open it
If nothing happens, you launched the game a different way than the one you enabled the console through (Steam launch options only apply when Steam starts the game), or your keyboard has function lock on and F5 is being sent as a media key. Type help for the list of commands on your build.
What 1.0 changed about cheating
Valheim 1.0 flags cheating permanently.
Valheim 1.0 added achievements, and Iron Gate's 1.0 FAQ spells out the cost of cheating. Using most console commands — spawn included — puts a permanent flag on the character and on the world that says they can never earn achievements. Characters that used cheats before 1.0 are flagged too, so a long-running save does not get a clean slate.
Spawned items are marked. A clean character who picks one up enters a temporary cheat state until every cheated item is out of their inventory. The Hammer world modifier, which removes build cost, counts as a temporary cheat as well.
A few commands are exceptions and freefly is one of them. The game also asks for confirmation before it puts you into a cheated state, so it cannot happen by accident.
Admin commands are not cheats. kick, ban, unban, save and the world modifier commands never flag anything, which means on a shared server you can run admin commands freely and treat devcommands as a decision for the whole group.
Player commands
No cheats and no admin rights needed. Nothing here flags your achievements — these are safe to use on a character you care about.

Emotes
Type these in the chat window with a leading slash. No devcommands needed. The full set: /wave /sit /challenge /cheer /nonono /thumbsup /point /blowkiss /bow /cower /cry /despair /flex /comehere /headbang /kneel /laugh /roar /shrug /dance /relax /toast /rest /vibe
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
/dance | A worked example — every emote above follows the same pattern. Typing / and pressing tab shows the list on your build. |
Admin commands
Only available when your SteamID64 or crossplay player ID is in the server's admin list. This is the whole vanilla admin set — admin rights on a Valheim server are about moderation, not cheating, and none of these flag your character.

kick [name/ip/userID] | Kicks the named user. |
ban [name/ip/userID] | Bans the named user. |
unban [name/ip/userID] | Removes a user from the ban list. |

setworldmodifier [name] [value] | Sets a world modifier slider value. |
setworldpreset [name] | Resets all world modifiers to a named preset. |
resetworldkeys | Resets all world modifiers to default. Does not reset gameplay progression keys. |
Cheat commands
Type devcommands and press enter to unlock these, and devcommands again to switch them off. They work in single player and in a world you host from your own game. See the achievement warning above before you use any of them.

Spawn syntax and where to get IDs
The spawn command takes three arguments and only the first is required: spawn [item] [amount] [level]. So spawn Deer 1 2 spawns a single
level 2 deer. Prefab names are case sensitive — deer will not
work where Deer does, and this catches almost everyone the first time.
Item and creature IDs are not listed in game, and there are far too many to reproduce here
reliably. The community Valheim Wiki maintains the full prefab list, and location [name] takes structure names from the same source. If you are hunting a
specific item, spawn a category you know — itemset gives you a whole gear loadout
— and read the real ID off your inventory.
Running cheats on a dedicated server
A vanilla dedicated server refuses every cheat command, whether or not you are an admin. The
workaround is the Server Devcommands mod by JereKuusela, installed with BepInEx on both the
server and each client that needs it. With it installed, admins get the cheat set
automatically and do not need to type devcommands first.
Note that BepInEx mods and crossplay cannot run on the same server at once, so a modded server is effectively Steam-only. Console players cannot install those client mods either.
The one command seed hunters actually need
printseeds is a player command, needs no cheats, and prints the seed and position
of nearby dungeons. The line you want reads world seed: -925266684/MXADgi5IxT — the text after the slash is the seed the game
actually uses, and the number before it is the same seed in numeric form, which map tools do
not take. If you are trying to find out what your world is built on, that is the fastest route
in game, and our guide to finding your seed covers the
three other ways including reading it out of a save file.
Console command questions
Why do my Valheim console commands do nothing?
Nine times out of ten it is the wrong command system. Admin commands such as kick, ban and save are the only ones a dedicated server honours, and you have to be on its admin list. Cheat commands such as spawn, god and fly need devcommands typed first, and a vanilla dedicated server refuses them entirely, admin or not.
Do console commands disable achievements in Valheim 1.0?
Most of them do, and the flag is permanent. 1.0 added achievements, and using commands including spawn marks both the character and the world as never able to earn them. If your group cares about achievements, treat devcommands as a group decision rather than a personal one. Admin commands like kick, ban and save are not cheats and never flag anything.
How do I open the console on Xbox?
Through the gameplay setting. Hold LB + RB + MENU, then press A to bring up the keyboard — but the console also has to be switched on in Settings, because the Call to Arms update turned it off by default on Xbox. Guides written before September 2025 will tell you no setup is needed, which is no longer true.
Do I still need -console in my launch options?
Not usually. Since the Call to Arms update there is a toggle in the gameplay settings, and that is the simplest route. The -console launch option still works and overrides the setting, which makes it the reliable choice on an older build or a launcher that ignores the setting.
What does devcommands replace?
The old imacheater command. Typing devcommands switches cheat commands on, and typing it again switches them off. If you copy a command list from a 2021 guide and it mentions imacheater, that guide predates the change.
Can I remove the cheat flag from my character or world?
No. Valheim 1.0 has no supported way to clear it, and the flag applies to the world as well as the character. Starting a fresh character in a flagged world does not help either — which is why the honest answer is to decide before you cheat, not after.
